UEFA Nations League: England Gunning For Solo Lead, Denmark In Trouble

England vs Denmark

The Danes will aim to keep their UEFA Nations League aspirations alive as they visit the mighty Three Lions over at the Wembley Stadium this Thursday night.

Smack-dabbed in the tough Group A2 alongside England, Belgium, and Ireland, Denmark cannot afford to have a negative result on this one if they ever plan on making it far to this showcase tournament.

England lead the group with seven points while Belgium are right behind them with six. Denmark are third with four points while Iceland have yet to grab one in this tournament so far.

Gareth Southgate’s men have been in peak form despite facing some bumps in the road, and they look to be one of the prohibitive favourites to bring home the trophy.

Meanwhile, Denmark are coming off of a thumping win over Iceland yesterday and they are hopeful that they can carry enough momentum against one of the world’s best teams in England come Thursday.

Can Kasper Hjulmand’s side spring an upset? Or will Gareth Southgate’s group reign supreme once again?

Here is today’s match preview courtesy of SBOTOP.

Talking Points

England are locked and loaded

Gareth Southgate has a good problem on his hands as he will make the envious decision on who will he put in the starting XI ahead of this match.

England has one of the deepest rosters in the world and they have several players who are more than capable of pouring in UEFA Nations League 2020 highlights.

In their friendly against Wales, Southgate has uncovered new heroes that should serve them well in their campaign moving forward as Premier League standouts Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Conor Coady, Danny Ings, and Jack Grealish have turned in some of their finest performances.

With the likes of Tammy Abraham, Ben Chilwell, and Jadon Sancho out due to disciplinary reasons, developments like these are helpful for an England squad who are trying to re-assert themselves as the world’s best.

Recently, they defeated the world’s no. 1 in Belgium in a 2-1 thriller.

The game almost slipped out of their hands when Romelu Lukaku scored within 16 minutes for Belgium. However, Marcus Rashford and Mason Mount conspired for a momentous comeback to steal the victory.

Belgium may have exposed some of England’s vulnerability for Denmark to study upon their film session, which is why the Three Lions would be wise to not to take the Danes lightly.

Denmark looking to stay alive

Kasper Hjulmand got his first competitive win as the Danes’ head coach and he is certainly hopeful that they can turn things around in Group A2.

Their chances of making it to the next round are looking bleak especially after a poor run of results in their first few matches.

Denmark will be aiming to secure their second win in UEFA Nations League as they visit Wembley Stadium
Denmark players during their match against Iceland

They clearly had a rough time in finding the back of the net as they were held scoreless in their matches against England and Belgium prior to Iceland.

The duo of Robert Skov and Christian Eriksen would have to do the heavy lifting anew if they want to make it far in the tournament.

Yussuf Poulsen and Martin Braithwaite should also contribute to their attack while Mathias Jensen and Thomas Delaney can provide fresh legs in the midfield.

The Three Lions are sure to try and exploit the Danes’ suspect backline, and that will be a crucial factor too for this match.

History

The historical matchup between the Three Lions and the Danes has been one-sided.

In their 22 matches against each other, England won in 13, while Denmark won in four along with five draws.

One of those draws came from last month where both were held to a stalemate.

The teams’ most recent clash in the Wembley Stadium dates back to March 2014 where Daniel Sturridge scored the only goal in the said friendly.

Betting Tip

??
England vs Denmark England Asian Handicap -0.50 @ 1.74
October 15, 02:45 (GMT+8)

Gareth Southgate’s men are expected to come out on top not only in this match, but in the Group A2 as well.

England are placed to win at 1.73, while Denmark are priced at 4.70 and a draw is at 3.45 in the Asian Handicap market, according to the latest UEFA Nations League 2020 odds.

While their first matchup in this tournament ended in a goalless draw, it is likely that it won’t be the case this time. With capable goalscorers on both sides, I see this going Over 2.50 @ 1.54 or Total Goal 2-3 @ 1.90.

Gareth Southgate’s men can tighten their hold at the top spot in Group A2 and they are in control of their destiny here in the UEFA Nations League.
