Leicester City 1-6 Tottenham Hotspur
Kane and very able!
There are football games which remind you of real talents and this was one such occasion.
The betting odds all pointed to a close encounter between the two sides who contested last season’s Premier League.
However, by the end of this, the gulf was huge and the name on everyone’s lips was Harry Kane.
He is now the clear favourite among sports betting fans to win the Premier League Golden Boot after a four goal haul – including two in the last few minutes – took his league tally for the season to 26 (two clear of Romelu Lukaku) with one game to go.
This victory also ensured the Premier League runners-up surpassed Leicester’s title-winning total of 81 points from a year ago.
Granted, this Leicester side was missing a number of the key figures who played such an instrumental role in that triumph – skipper Wes Morgan, Robert Huth, Danny Drinkwater and Andy King among them.
But this was a romp with Son Heung-min scoring either side of half-time to take his tally to 20 for the campaign in all competitions in an all-around dynamic attacking display.
How the 12-month Wembley project will go while White Hart Lane is redeveloped remains to be seen, but certainly, Spurs are closer now than at any stage in my lifetime to make the next step up to champions of England.
Indeed, this victory took their tally to 83 points which would have been enough to claim the crown on eight occasions in the history of the Premier League.
So an embarrassing result for Leicester, who would have probably qualified for Europe if they replicated the form they’ve shown under interim manager Craig Shakespeare over a longer period.
The Foxes have registered fewer points than any defending champions in Premier League history and can only reach 46 should they see off Bournemouth in their final match on Sunday.
The nearest comparison is when Leeds gained 51 points in the inaugural Premier League campaign when they were defending champions (granted, that was from a 42- league game season).
Back to the main man, though, as the final word should go to Kane – the fifth players to score 25 or more Premier League goals in successive seasons.
He was simply four-midable as Leicester were hit for six.
