Hamburger SV 1-0 Augsburg
After losing a number of key players this summer, Augsburg never really threatened against Hamburg in the opener. Hamburg, of course, also struggled to find their rhythm on the attack, but Nicolai Muller’s eighth-minute volley from near post was enough to give them all the points. The home team won’t be happy though that the 29-year-old twisted his knee while celebrating.
Mainz 05 0-1 Hannover 96
Martin Harnik and Hannover 96 are back with a bang as they silenced Opel Arena with a close win over the O-Fives. The hosts enjoyed the better of the first half and even capped the game with a 62 percent ball possession; however, the returning 96 side upped their game in the second and was rightfully rewarded when Harnik scored from close range from a Matthias Ostrzolek assist.
VfL Wolfsburg 0-3 Borussia Dortmund
Dortmund are once again set to contend – their three-goal win over the Wolves is proof of that. It helped BVB that Wolfsburg lacked the tools to turn the tide, though their quality can’t be denied with Christian Pulisic, Marc Bartra and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang all finding the back of the net and playing better than ever.
BVB will face a tougher test next week against Hertha, but they are more than capable of beating the Asian Handicap odds -1.50 @ 2.11, especially if the trio can click again the way they did in this match.
Schalke 04 2-0 RB Leipzig
It’s still too early to predict if this is a symptom of a second-season syndrome for Leipzig, but it’s safe to say that New Schalke boss Domenico Tedesco prepared his side well for this encounter. The home team’s tactics of denying space and playing long balls to stop the Bulls’ relentless pressing paid dividends as they dominated in both intervals, with Nabil Bentaleb converting a spot-kick in the first half and Yevhen Konoplyanka scoring off the counter with 17 minutes left in the second.
Leipzig will have a chance to bounce back from this defeat in next week’s match with Freiburg where they are at 1X2 odds of 1.44. However, they need to attack better if they are to poke a hole on Freiburg’s defence.
SC Freiburg 0-0 Eintracht Frankfurt
Despite dominating for the most part, Frankfurt had to settle for a point in the first and only goalless draw of the opening weekend. The Eagles had several opportunities to score—particularly a header that went wide from new signing Simon Falette—but to no avail. Meanwhile, Freiburg thought they broke the deadlock when Tim Kleindienst found the back of the net, though the VAR ruled it out for a Florian Niederlechner offside. The stalemate went on and even super-subs Nils Petersen and Kevin-Prince Boateng weren’t able to change the course of the game for their respective teams.
Borussia Monchengladbach 1-0 FC Koln
Gladbach won the Rhine Derby against local rivals Cologne, all thanks to a second-half strike from Nico Elvedi. The Billy Goats rarely threatened and the deficit could have been bigger for them if not for keeper Timo Horn, who made life hard for the Foals.
The hosts would be happy with the result though after an excellent performance from Raffael and Lars Stindl despite failing to convert their scoring chances.
