The good and the bad from Arsène Wenger

Arsene Wenger

If there is one thing you can be sure that will remain as constant as the sun shining in the morning and the sun setting in the evening, it is this: in the English Premier League, Arsène Wenger will always be an interesting personality that says great and bad things in one breath.

Well, not actually in one breath. But Wenger has always been like this – unlike others who is either consistently terrible or consistently good, Wenger’s consistency is found in his persistent unpredictability, and the post-match interview after the Gunner’s bout with West Ham United has showed this again.

I guess, this is why we love and hate him, because he says things that make us nod in agreement, followed by a statement that makes the audience go ‘What now?’

First, the bad – or at least, the laughable comment: Wenger described the bad points of Arsenal’s game against West Ham as an accident. An accident usually is a rare, unexpected thing, something you can’t prepare for. It is fast and never lingering. If it’s going on for a full 90 minutes, it isn’t an accident anymore.

So to say that Arsenal going scoreless despite 62% of possession and 22 shots is an accident is highly inaccurate, and definitely questionable. The accident was Arsenal started in the wrong foot. It ceased being an accident because they stayed that way even if they had another 45 minutes to make changes and right the ship.

But Wenger somehow vindicated himself by saying something on-point in that same occasion.

“Today we have to look at ourselves and think we were not good enough and not to think that these kinds of things are solutions for us,” said Wenger, explaining that the prospect of future signings should never be an excuse nor a promise that they will get better in the future.

I am sure Arsenal will find their bearings soon, and I am just as sure that this is not the end of the entertaining things Wenger says.
