Borussia Dortmund vs Bayern Munich
Fifth plays first in the Bundesliga match of the weekend when Borussia Dortmund entertain Bayern Munich at the Signal Iduna Park.
Der Klassiker is always one of Europe’s most watched games and on Saturday that will definitely be the case as the Bavarians are currently six points clear at the top of the table and ten ahead of Die Schwarzgelben. An away win could well stretch the gap beyond Dortmund’s reach and it wouldn’t do any favours to the other chasers, a draw would suit Bayern but a home win…well that could well bring the title race to life.
Nuri Sahin’s Borussia Dortmund come into the game on the back of a thumping 4-0 win over Freiburg while Vincent Kompany’s Bayern Munich beat Augsburg 3-0 and while BVB have been superb at home, Die Bayern have been extremely strong on the road. This all adds up to a must-see Klassiker and one with a huge amount at stake.
Talking Points
Adeyemi nearing Dortmund return
Borussia’s Bundesliga 2024 results have been patchy to say the least with six wins, one draw and four defeats so far, but Sahin can rightly argue he has had more than his fair share of injury problems. The Dortmund coach has had to shuffle his pack at times, using midfielder Pascal Gross as a defender, but things seem to be looking up with the return of goalkeeper Gregor Kobel and centre back Waldermar Anton. Star striker Serhou Guirassy missed the win over Freiburg but he is fit to return and there may be more good news in the attacking department as Karim Adeyemi has been reported to be ready for a recall. He also failed to make the Freiburg game but BVB put in a superb attacking performance, and the addition of both Guirassy and Adeyemi would be a huge boost for the hosts. The 22 year old Adeyemi has electric pace and he scored two goals and made three assists in the first five league games but he suffered a muscle tear during a 7-1 drubbing of Celtic in October, a match in which he scored a hat-trick.
BVB are home birds and that was evident in abundance as they thrashed SC Freiburg, with lively forward Jamie Bynoe-Gittens on the score sheet again to make it three goals and three assists for the campaign The four for Dortmund against Freiburg made it 26 goals at home in eight games; and the famous Yellow Wall in a packed 81,000 crowd always makes this a hostile place to visit…and they will have an especially warm welcome prepared for their fiercest rivals.
Kane is gathering speed
The Bundesliga 2024 betting odds are firmly behind Bayern Munich regaining the title they held for over a decade but these are still relatively early days. Champions Bayer Leverkusen and Red Bull Leipzig are both threats, as well as Dortmund. Kompany has made a strong start to his stint as Bayern Munich manager and he owes much of that to his star striker Harry Kane who has adapted to life in Germany with impressive ease. In his debut season he scored 36 goals in the Bundesliga and won the European Golden Shoe. He’s leading the race in Germany this year with 14 goals and five assists and that tally includes a hat-trick last week as he scored the three to beat FC Augsburg. A tall and strong player, Kane has been one of the best line leaders in the business for over a decade. But he is so much more than that, with an incredible range of goals in his locker, poacher goals, pile-drivers, clever flicks and thundering headers. And there are few better penalty takers in the world. With Michael Olise, Jamal Musiala and Kingsley Coman all buzzing around Kane will take advantage of any chaos in the opponents’ defence.
History
Der Klassiker has been dominated by Bayern over the past three decades with 45 wins to 20 and there have been 17 draws. Strangely, both clashes ended in an away win last term, Bayern winning 4-0 in Dortmund before BVB took their revenge in Munich with a 2-0 win in March.
Bayern have won their last six matches in all competitions while BVB’s form has been patchy, with three wins and three defeats; but Die Schwarzgelben have won all six of their home league games this term.
The Bavarians have been very strong on the road with five wins and one draw so the stakes could hardly be higher with two unbeaten runs to protect.
Betting Tip
This fixture is a belter for SBOTOP Bundesliga fans and a game which could bring BVB into the title race reckoning, if they can win this match at a price of 3.83. FC Bayern are available at 1.64 and the draw is 3.90 in a game which really can go any way.
But I think Dortmund in front of a deafening Yellow Wall are irresistible…and this could be their Klassiker.
