Tottenham Hotspur vs Arsenal
Arsene Wenger knows it’s time to roll the dice, and where better to start than in the massive North London Derby on Sunday at White Hart Lane?
The sports betting world doesn’t see Arsenal as a hot tip for a top-four place, but Wenger’s comfortable with that. The biggest football games are there to be won and to do that, you need to be brave.
After his team’s 86th-minute win against Leicester City in midweek, the Gunners boss said: “We have to win our games and so that’s why every time we cannot be happy with 0-0. We have absolutely to take the gamble to try to win the game at any cost.”
It’s a big ask, four points from fourth place. But Arsenal’s shock defeat to Crystal Palace two weeks ago punctuated an impressive run of three wins, including an FA Cup semi-final victory over Manchester City. Wenger believes his team is gathering momentum.
Spurs did what the Gunners couldn’t; they beat Crystal Palace to make it eight league wins on the bounce and cut the gap between Spurs and Chelsea to four points with five games to go. Mauricio Pochettino hopes his team is stronger with the experience of losing the league to Leicester last season: “We have to try and recover which is easier when you win,” he said. “It could be the last derby at White Hart Lane, and it will be very special for our fans. It will be an exciting game.”
Indeed it will. A repeat of the 1-1 result at the Emirates in November will be no good for anyone. Wenger won’t be the only one gambling if the scores are level.
