K-League: Struggling Suwon, Incheon Search for First Win

Suwon Samsung Bluewings vs Incheon United

Suwon Bluewings and Incheon United have both had rough starts to the new K-League season. Neither club has picked up a win in their first two games; Suwon have lost both of their games, while Incheon have had back-to-back goalless draws.

The two early-season strugglers will look to score that first win of the campaign when they clash at Suwon World Cup Stadium.

Suwon have a great record against Incheon at home, but the visitors have yet to concede a goal this season and will look to frustrate their hosts.

Talking Points

Suwon’s tough start

Suwon Bluewings are just one of three clubs who have yet to win through the first two rounds of the K-League season.

To be fair, they had just about the toughest start to the season that anyone could have as they faced last year’s top two — champions Jeonbuk Motors and Ulsan Hyundai — in back-to-back weeks.

They were outplayed away to Jeonbuk, but despite going down to 10 men, they were still on course for a point. Eventually, though, veteran Lee Dong-Gook popped up with a late winner for the champions.

Suwon’s match against Ulsan was much more painful, though. The Bluewings were flying after going up 2-0 within 48 minutes and looked on course to defy the K-League 2020 odds.

But they suffered a horrific collapse in the second half as Ulsan scored three goals in the final 35 minutes. Junior Negao bagged a brace, including a 90th-minute winner, which is one of the top K-League 2020 highlights thus far.

Suwon’s star striker, Adam Taggart, has had a slow start to the season. The Australian was the K-League’s Golden Boot winner last year with 20 goals in his debut campaign. However, he has yet to get on the scoresheet this season.

This match against Incheon could be just the game to get him on track, though. Taggart scored four of his 20 goals last season in four matches against Incheon.

Incheon still struggling to score

It has been quite a dull start to the season for Incheon United. After two matches, they’ve picked up two draws, without a single going in at either direction.

In fairness to them, though, they went up against Daegu FC and Seongnam, who had two best defences last season outside of the top two, Jeonbuk and Ulsan.

Meanwhile, it was a big positive that they did not concede themselves; Incheon’s defence gave up 54 goals last season, the fourth-most in the league.

Incheon remain highly reliant on star striker Stefan Mugosa for their goals. The Montenegrin scored 14 goals last season; the rest of the side combined for just 19.

Mugosa has yet to show that type of form thus far this season and has not even been able to finish the entire 90 minutes in each of the first two games.

With so few other reliable scoring options, Mugosa needs to get going for Incheon to end their goal drought.

Meanwhile, Incheon have another significant injury concern with Rashid Mahazi. The new midfielder has made a good first impression with Incheon, but he is questionable to feature against Suwon.

History

Suwon Bluewings and Incheon United met four times last season. Suwon won the first two games, which were both high-scoring affairs, 3-1 and 3-2.

Incheon finally got one back on Suwon with a 1-0 away win. But Suwon got the last laugh as Myung Jun-jae scored a late winner to grab a 1-1 draw in their final meeting.

Incheon and Suwon have quite a storied history with 47 all-time meetings. Suwon have had the sizable advantage, though, as they’ve won 27 of those meetings while Incheon have won just six, with 14 draws.

Suwon’s loss to Incheon last season was the first time they lost to Incheon in their last 15 meetings at home (11 wins, 3 draws).

Betting Tip

??
Suwon Samsung Bluewings vs Incheon United Suwon Samsung Bluewings 1X2 @ 1.74
May 23, 15:30 GMT+8

SBOBET odds have Suwon as sizable favourites at 1.74 to grab their first win of the season at home. Incheon United have 4.40 odds to pull off the upset, and the draw is 3.60.

Based on all the factors, though, it’s best not to overthink this one. Suwon are the better team, and if not for two very tough matches, should have had at least a point after two games.

They have also dominated Incheon at home over the years, and with Incheon’s top scorer struggling for form, the signs are pointing toward another Suwon win.
