That’s no disrespect to Valencia. But with Champions League commitments in midweek, three of the top four can take Saturday off.
Barcelona and the Madrid giants play their football games on latter part of the weak. Atletico have the toughest task and could see the betting odds on a glorious finish lengthen if they fail to beat Villarreal. But before we hit the second half of the weekend there are some big basement battles and great handicap betting opportunities in the best of the rest.
WEEK 29 SATURDAY:
Levante vs Eibar
The weekend’s opener pits Eibar, who are chasing for a Europe League place, against Levante who are desperately trying to avoid the drop. A win last week has helped new boss Paco Lopez’ side move four points clear of 18th; and what they’d give for another win here. The hosts are at odds of 3.20, with Eibar at 2.29 and 3.15 the draw.
Deportivo La Coruna vs Las Palmas
In many ways this is the game of the day as 19th-placed Depor host 18th-placed Las Palmas. With Levante winning last week, neither can climb out of the bottom three with a win, so a draw is definitely no good to either. It may be good for you though, if you fancy a stalemate at odds of 3.55!
Valencia vs Alaves
With the rest of the top six playing on Sunday, Valencia can make early ground; with a Champions League place now theirs to lose. A good run has pulled Alaves well clear of the drop but they arrive at the Mestalla on the back of two defeats. Valencia’s scoring trio of Santi Mina, Rodrigo Moreno, and Simone Zaza are all in double figures.
WEEK 29 SUNDAY:
Real Sociedad vs Getafe
With ten matches to go there’s not a lot for these two teams to worry about at either end of the table. So the coaches are jostling for position and bonuses with players playing for contracts. Both have won two, drawn one and lost three of the last six, but Getafe has won three of the last five meetings, all 2-1.
Real Betis vs RCD Espanyol
Real Betis could climb to within a point of a Europa place if they can beat Espanyol. The visitors have struggled of late to win on their travels but are unbeaten in seven, and have an in-form striker in 12-goal Gerard Moreno. Real Betis are at 1.95 with a -0.25 goal handicap, while Espanyol are available at 2.40 Draw no Bet.
Leganes vs Sevilla
Fresh from conquering Manchester, Sevilla head to Madrid not for more Champions League glory but to take on Leganes in a very winnable La Liga fixture. The home side have acquitted themselves well to almost guarantee a third season at the top table, but have taken only four points from the last six.
Barcelona vs Athletic Bilbao
It all happens on Sunday for the top three and Barca can maintain an eight-point lead at the top with a victory over Athletic Bilbao. The 12th-placed visitors’ best hope is that Chelsea has somehow bruised Barca in midweek but having lost the last three on their travels, odds of 1.90 for them to win needs a +2.25 goal start.
WEEK 29 MONDAY:
Villarreal vs Atletico Madrid
Atletico can’t afford to slip up against Villarreal so will hope that rumours of a summer transfer to Barca hasn’t distracted the brilliant Antoine Griezmann. But their recent record against the Yellow Submarine isn’t good, losing three and drawing two of the last five. It could be a big weekend.
Celta Vigo vs Malaga
Maxi Gomez and Iago Aspas have scored 30 between them for Celta Vigo and will expect to add to that tally when they face Malaga. The visitors look doomed, rock bottom and 11 points from safety, while Celta should keep their slim hopes of European football alive.
Real Madrid vs Girona
With Girona shaping up to become a force in La Liga, this could be another great Madrid/Catalonia clash in the future. For now, with a Champions League place nailed on, Los Blancos are playing with attacking menace again, while Girona press for Europe in seventh, spearheaded by 15-goal Cristhian Stuani.
