Angers 0-1 PSG
An injury time own goal gave PSG a hard fought win in the Coupe de France final, breaking the brave hearts of Angers.
Against the weight of betting odds, the underdogs held out for 90 minutes before the unlucky Issa Cissokho put through his own goal as the pressure mounted. All pre-match betting tips pointed to a PSG win, maybe a low scoring one, but not quite so close. And all credit to Stephane Moulin’s Angers for putting up such a courageous battle.
After a disappointing season the pressure was on Unai Emery’s Parisians and, in the early exchanges, star players Angel Di Maria and Julian Draxler kept up the supply to the prolific Edinson Cavani, but he failed to find the net.
And it was Angers who came closer, on 27 minutes, when Nicolas Pepe beat Alphonse Areola in the Paris goal, only to see his 20 yarder strike the post. That seemed to give Angers some confidence that they were here at the Stade de France on merit, although top scorer Famara Diedhiou was struggling to make an impact.
Emery’s men came out for the second half on the attack with Draxler and Di Maria still pulling the strings and, as PSG tried to take the initiative, Angers boss Stephane Moulin replaced Diedhiou with Jonathan Bamba to shore up his midfield and a brave defensive display almost took his team to extra time.
PSG had dominated the ball but without an end result until the unfortunate Cissokho did the job for them.
It’s an 11th Coupe for PSG…and it doesn’t matter how they come!
