Premier League:  Burnley Can Hit Two Birds in One Stone if They Beat Spurs

Time is running out for Burnley to get out of the relegation zone and preserve their Premier League status for next season. With two games left, it’s win or go home for Vincent Kompany and co.

The Clarets’ next assignment is a game against Spurs on Saturday at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Burnley will look to pounce on Ange Postecoglou and his men, who are currently on a four-game losing streak.

Tottenham are the fifth seed and are looking to lock down their Europa League berth next season, but despite being in pole position, they also need this win since there are a couple of teams right behind them.

Newcastle United, Chelsea, and Manchester United will also be watching this game with interest since they will be cheering for Burnley to beat Tottenham.

Tottenham have a leaky defence

Since winning against Nottingham Forest at the start of April, Tottenham have been on a brutal stretch, losing to Newcastle United, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool. During their four-game slide, they have conceded a whopping 13 goals.

Many point to their goalkeeper, Guglielmo Vicario, as the reason why they’ve conceded shots left and right because he is being targeted in the air, where he is often outmuscled by bigger players. But, to be fair, entre-backs Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero should also do a better job at protecting their goalie.

The statistics show that one of Tottenham’s biggest weaknesses is defending set pieces, given that they’ve conceded 15 goals in such instances. Overall, they have conceded 58 league goals this season.

On the bright side, Tottenham’s attack remains potent, as they’ve already recorded the seventh-most goals in the league.

Heung-Min Son is in the Top 10 of this year’s Golden Boot race with 17 goals and nine assists, while strike partner Richarlison has 11 goals and four assists.

Brennan Johnson and Dejan Kulusevski are also dangerous up front for Spurs. The two of them have combined for 11 goals and 11 assists so far this year.

Goals starting to come for Burnley

Save for their losses against Everton and Newcastle United, Burnley have done better in recent weeks with a 4-1 win against Sheffield United and draws against Wolves, Brighton, and Manchester United. Since April, they have recorded eight goals in six league games.

Zeki Amdouni, Jacob Bruun Larsen, and Dara O’Shea have found their rhythm in the final third, making them the men to look out for this weekend if you’re a Tottenham defender. Amdouni and Bruun Larsen are the Clarets’ leading scorers this season with six goals apiece, while O’Shea has logged four goals and four assists, impressive numbers for a centre-back.

Amdouni came off the bench against Newcastle United on Saturday, so he will look to reclaim his spot in the starting XI.

Another interesting development for Burnley is the benching of James Trafford in favour of Arijanet Muric. Trafford might continue to sit on the bench given how the Clarets are playing better with Muric in goal.

History

Tottenham and Burnley have already met two times this season, with the former winning both times.

Spurs defeated the Clarets 5-2 in their reverse fixture last September, as Heung-Min Son (hat-trick), Cristian Romero, James Maddison, Lyle Foster, and Josh Brownhill all found the back of the net.

Ange Postecoglou’s side got the best of Vincent Kompany’s men again four months later in the third round of the FA Cup, as Pedro Porro scored the marginal goal in the 78^th minute.

Tottenham have won seven of their last eight Premier League home matches against Burnley (D1), winning the last four without conceding a single goal. Burnley’s last road win against Tottenham was a 3-2 result at White Hart Lane in October 1974.
