Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Tottenham Hotspur
17th hosts 14th at Molineux on Sunday afternoon, but the Premier League game between the Wolves and Tottenham is anything but a drab lower mid-table clash.
Vitor Pereira has done a superb job since arriving as head coach at Molineux in December, and his team has powered away from the drop zone, with any worries of relegation long gone. Meanwhile, Ange Postecoglou has had a funny old second season at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with his team struggling to emulate last term’s strong performance, with a long line of injuries to key players hampering their progress, but they are going well in Europe.
Wolves beat 18th-placed Ipswich Town last week to pretty much confirm their survival, while Spurs beat bottom club Southampton and, while Wolverhampton are not mathematically safe, now 12 points clear of the drop zone and with just seven games remaining, they can start to plan for next season.
Though Pereira will be keen to see how high his team can climb this term, and a win over Tottenham could draw Wolverhampton level with West Ham United and Everton on 35 points, two behind Spurs, and three behind Manchester United.
He needs results elsewhere to go his way, but there is no reason Pereira and his players can’t look upwards now rather than over their shoulders. And he will be helped by the fact that Tottenham are on that old Thursday to Sunday regime with a testy Europa League clash against Eintracht Frankfurt three days before they meet.
Talking Points
Cunha to return for Wolves?
As all SBOTOP football fans know, any team hoping to survive in the Premier League needs at least one 10 goals a season striker and, despite spending the entire season so far trying to shake off the bottom three, Wolves have two.
Matheus Cunha with 13 goals and Jorgen Strand Larsen with 11 sit eighth and 13th in the list of the Premier League top scorers, and Cunha has been out for the last four games.
Wolves had a bit of a sticky patch in February finishing the month with a 2-1 defeat to Fulham and then going out of the FA Cup in a penalty shootout to Bournemouth. Brazil star Cunha scored in that game, but he picked up a red card for an alleged headbutt, and he subsequently copped a four-match ban for violent conduct. Since then, Wolves have picked up one draw and three wins, as Strand Larsen has stepped up to the plate, scoring four goals in three games.
If Cunha returns, then one of Marshall Munetsi or Jean-Ricner Bellegarde will likely step down, but will Pereira want to change his winning formula?
Johnson back on song for Spurs
In a Spurs team full of world-renowned creative players, Wales winger Brennan Johnson made a superb start to the 2024/25 campaign to stake his claim to a place, alongside the likes of Heung-Min Son, Dejan Kulusevski, and James Maddison. He scored in seven consecutive matches for club and country but, after suffering a calf injury in January, Johnson has struggled to get back to his best.

But he certainly reached those heights against the Saints last weekend scoring a first-half brace, his first home goals in 2025. Johnson has now scored 11 goals in the league and 16 across all competitions for Tottenham, and he will be a key player for the Europa League quarter-final clash this week.
James Maddison, with nine goals and six assists in the league, has been consistent this season, while summer signing Dominic Solanke has struggled to make an impact, so the goals of Johnson have been crucial.
At the other end of the pitch, the return of the excellent Micky van de Ven has boosted the back four. He was rested for the match with Southampton and, as the Europa League is Spurs’ last chance of silverware, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him on the bench for the Wolves game too.
History
Spurs have had marginally the better of the head-to-heads with 10 wins to Wolves’ eight, and there have been four draws in recent years. The two teams drew 2-2 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium just after Pereira had taken the reins at Wolves.
The hosts have better Premier League 2025 results with three wins, one draw, and two defeats from the last six, while Spurs have two wins, one draw, and three defeats.
Betting Tip
Spurs are available at a price of 2.66 to win and the draw is at 3.22, but I can’t ignore the visitors’ Europa priorities when I make my tips using the Premier League 2025 odds. The extra workload and the fact that Europe is Spurs only chance of a long-awaited trophy makes this game a lower stakes match, especially with a trip to Frankfurt for the second leg just four days later.
For Wolverhampton, this is an important game and a big chance to keep climbing and, with an attack firing with reinforcements available, Over 3.00 at 2.06 is my alternative bet.
