Serie A: Inter Set to Send SPAL Closer to Drop

SPAL vs Inter Milan

Suddenly, Inter Milan are back up to second in the Serie A table. Despite some shaky form since the restart, the Nerazzurri have still managed to overtake Lazio, who have completely collapsed over the last few weeks.

Inter will now have a great chance to improve their Serie A 2020 odds for claiming that second spot as they face bottom-club SPAL. The Biancazzurri are all set to go down to Serie B, and their form since the restart has been quite disastrous.

Talking Points

SPAL set for the drop

SPAL are almost surely getting relegated this season. They are still stuck in last place, 11 points from safety with just 18 points left to play for.

SPAL were already in big trouble before the lockdown, and their Serie A 2020 results have not improved since the restart.

They’ve yet to win a game in their six matches back and have picked up a single point. That came at home against Milan, where they were unlucky not to get the win.

They had gone up two goals within half an hour but went a man down just before half-time. They still looked set to hang on for the win, but an own-goal deep in stoppage time cruelly denied them victory.

Since then, SPAL have continued on their skid, losing big to Sampdoria, Udinese, and Genoa, who are all inside the bottom seven.

SPAL have had a hard time scoring all season — they are the lowest-scoring side in Serie A by a wide margin with just 23 goals — and it’s only continued after the restart. They’ve scored just three goals over their last six games.

Top scorer Andrea Petagna (12 goals) has scored just once during that time. That goal came in their 3-1 loss to Napoli, which is where he’s headed next season.

SPAL’s home form has been disastrous all season long, and it’s unlikely it improves against Inter. They’ve gone winless in each of their last 11 home matches, with three draws and eight losses.

Alexis’ Inter resurgence continues

Inter Milan were already quite inconsistent before the lockdown, and they’ve carried over that patchy form to the restart. The Nerazzurri have won four out of their seven matches, with two draws and one defeat.

After thrashing Brescia 6-0 in one of their best performances of the season, they lost 2-1 to Bologna and drew 2-2 in their tricky away match at Verona in their next two games.

However, they finally got back on track with a 3-1 win over Torino, which sent them back to second ahead of Lazio on goal difference.

After going down early to an Andrea Belotti goal, they scored three times in the first 16 minutes of the second half to turn the game on its head.

Serie A: Alexis Sanchez has contributed a goal and five assists since the restart

With Romelu Lukaku out due to injury, Alexis Sanchez once again made the most out of his opportunity to play as he set up two of Inter’s goals. The Chilean has rediscovered his best form at Inter and now has a goal with five assists since the restart.

Lautaro Martinez was also impressive, scoring a goal and setting up another as Inter continued their free-scoring ways post-restart. They’ve scored 19 goals in their seven games back, which is the highest total in the league at that time.

Their defence has taken a significant step back, allowing 10 goals in those seven games, but they should fancy their chances of keeping a clean sheet against the lowest-scoring side in the league.

History

With SPAL spending so little time in Serie A, they have quite a limited history of facing Inter. The two sides have met just five times overall, with Inter unsurprisingly winning four of them.

The Nerazzurri have won all three meetings at San Siro. That includes their first meeting this season, where Lautaro Martinez scored a brace to send Inter on their way.

The only time when SPAL were able to avoid defeat to Inter was in a 1-1 draw at home back in 2018. Alberto Paloschi scored a last-minute equaliser to give SPAL a share of the spoils.

Betting Tip

??
SPAL sv Inter Milan Inter Milan Asian Handicap -1.50 @ 1.96
July 17, 03:45 (GMT+8)

Unsurprisingly, the SBOBET odds heavily favour Inter Milan, who are priced at 1.35 to get the away win. SPAL are pegged at 8.00 despite being at home, with a draw at 4.80.

But the Asian Handicap market seems to be the better way to go in this match. Inter may be a bit up-and-down of late, but it’s hard not to see them winning their second game in a row against this SPAL side that’s already resigned to its fate.

Inter have been banging in the goals since the restart, and this matchup should be another great opportunity for the likes of Alexis and Lautaro to score some more goals en route to a comfortable win.
