Arsenal vs Everton
It’s been a funny old season at Arsenal, though some of the grumpier fans at the Emirates may not agree with me.
Yes, Champions League qualification is in doubt for the first time in two decades; betting websites have the Gunners as firm outsiders to grab one of the two available slots. Arsenal must hope that relegated Middlesbrough can defy betting tips, as well as their own form over 37 football games, to somehow get a point at Liverpool.
But looking on the bright side, which you have to do in these circumstances, Jurgen Klopp’s men have made a frustrating habit of dropping points against bottom-half teams. Meanwhile, Arsenal have an FA Cup final to look forward to and still boast some of the best players in the league.
Arsene Wenger needs to get the best out of his finest talent, Alexis Sanchez, who has grown more irritable as the season has gone on. But despite its flaky morale, Wenger’s team has recovered from a poor run to give itself a chance. Four wins on the bounce have taken it to the last day.
Everton are stranded in seventh place and have just one win in the last four, but Ronald Koeman’s side has shown enough this season to suggest they can hurt anyone on their day. Midfielder Ross Barkley seems to be trying to make a point to his boss, and powerful striker Romelu Lukaku is odds on to finish the season as the league’s top scorer.
It’s a big game for Arsenal; and while Arsene Wenger said he wasn’t concerned by the number of empty seats at Tuesday’s win over Sunderland, he’ll really be hoping for a full house to get behind his team for one final push.
