CONMEBOL World Cup 2026: Colombia Seek Copa Revenge

Colombia vs Argentina

Just two months after a pulsating Copa America final, the two finalists are about to get in on again, when CONMEBOL World Cup 2026: Colombia vs Argentina is the action on offer at the Metropolitano Roberto Melendez Stadium.

Having won the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 Copa America Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina are sitting proudly at the top of the FIFA World Rankings but Los Cafeteros, managed by Nestor Lorenzo, are better than their current standing of 17th.  Both have started their 2026 Wold Cup qualification campaigns in good form and each have a nice cushion over seventh place, meaning qualification for the finals is a near certainty for both Colombia and Argentina.

But this will be a fiercely competitive match as the Colombia vs Argentina 2024 betting odds tell us, and Los Cafeteros would dearly love to take some sweet revenge on their illustrious visitors.

Talking points

Diaz the danger man for Colombia

Can Luis Diaz contribute to their match against Argentina in World Cup 2026?
Liverpool’s Colombian Luis Diaz celebrates scoring the opening goal of the Premier League against Manchester United

Sitting handily in third place in the CONMEBOL World Cup table, Colombia are a real force to be reckoned with and they have a biting edge up front, as one of the most attacking sides to watch, with a 28 match unbeaten run before their Copa final loss to Argentina. Forward Luis Diaz scored a brace in Liverpool’s recent clash with Manchester United and he will be the danger man on Tuesday. His speed on the wing can be frightening and his ability to make space for himself and his team-mates can be devastating, and Diaz will likely line up alongside Aston Villa forward Jhon Duran ad Bournemouth’s Luis Sinisterra, both exciting forwards.

Veteran midfield James Rodriguez had a brilliant Copa America campaign and he’s been in La Liga action with Rayo Vallecano and could well make a start against Argentina.

No Messi for Argentina

The reigning World and Copa champions are without their talisman, captain and all time top scorer for this crucial clash after Lionel Messi picked up an injury in the Copa America final. But, much like Los Cafeteros, Scaloni’s side is blessed with attacking riches. Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez won the Capocannoniere last season as I Nerazzurri stormed to the 2024 Scudetto and he has scored an impressive 29 goals in 65 international appearances. Meanwhile 24 year old striker Julian Alvarez has just completed a big money move from Manchester City to Atletico Madrid and he is a real talent. A hard worker who will run through walls for his team, Alvarez is a constant source of ammunition for his strike partners as well as being a clinical finisher from distance or in tight spaces in the penalty area.

Add in to the mix the experienced fox in the box Paulo Dybala and the prodigious talent of Manchester United youngster Alejandro Garnacho and this is a front line to fear. If there is any space up front, debutant Giuliano Simeone of Atletico Madrid may get a look in and Lazio forward Valentin Castellanos could add to his one cap.

La Albiceleste have made a very strong start to their World Cup campaign and sit top by two points after winning five and drawing one, and they have conceded just one goal in their last seven games, in a 1-1 draw with Ecuador in the Copa America quarter final. With goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez as the last line of defence and the hard bitten quality and expertise of Nicolas Otamendi and Lisandro Martinez at the heart of the rearguard, this is a team which can win most of its battles at both ends of the pitch.

And you’d back them to win the midfield tussle with Rodrigo De Paul and Alexis MacAllister both able to control the pace and tempo of the game.

La Albiceleste are the best team in the world right now, and it’s easy to see why… even without Lionel Messi.

History

Argentina are football royalty as three times World champions and 14 times Copa America winners, while Colombia were World Cup quarter finalists in 2014 and Copa America champions in 2001.

La Albiceleste have had the better of the head to head Colombia vs Argentina 2024 results with four wins to one and there have been three draws, and the biggest win of all came just a few weeks ago!

Recent form slightly favours Argentina too having won ten and drawn just once in 2024 while Los Cafeteros have won eight, drawn two and lost the one.

Betting Tip

This is a clash between two top quality international sides with Colombia marginal favourites at SBOTOP odds of 2.47, Argentina at 2.61 and the draw is at 2.76.

I can’t see La Albiceleste losing their 2024 unbeaten run and they have more than enough firepower to hurt their hosts, in what promises to be a cracker.
