The Netherlands heads to Aberdeen this week, in a clash of the underachievers against the overachievers, both who have a huge point to prove.
The Dutch missed out on a play-off spot, on goal difference, having won their last three football games in Group A, finishing with 19 points. Meanwhile, Scotland’s fans were dreaming of an overseas foray; but found themselves in England’s group in a scrabble for second place. Against all the betting odds the Scots came pretty close, missing by a whisker having drawn their last game with Slovenia.
Despite failing to qualify, the sports betting market still respects the Dutch and installs them as clear favourites to win at 2.12, the draw is 3.30 with Scotland at 3.25. It’s a period of transition for the Netherlands but not one their fans are happy about, having failed to qualify for successive tournaments for the first time in 22 years. Arjen Robben remains an attacking threat alongside Bas Dost and Memphis Depay, and Everton’s Davy Klassen is a class act indeed.
Scotland will, as always, rely on pride and passion, embodied by fiercely loyal skipper Scott Brown, and temporary manager, Malky Mackay, will look to Aston Villa’s Robert Snodgrass to provide some magic. The tartan faithful still believe they can live with the best, and beating the Netherlands would be a good start.
But the Dutch will be in no mood to oblige, friendly or no friendly.
