Zlatan Ibrahimovic showed the football world just what a superstar he is, scoring twice to carry United, almost single-handedly, through to a dramatic EFL Cup Final win.
In an action packed 90 minutes, Southampton put up a great performance and were unlucky to be on the losing side. And then a clinical blow seemed to take the game away from Claude Puel’s men when Jesse Lingard fired home a beauty in the 38th minute. But Southampton came back again and changed the half time talks when Gabbiadini poached his deserved goal in first-half stoppage time.
Whatever was said in the Saints dressing room, it was more of the same in the second half, and within three minutes Gabbiadini swivelled and volleyed brilliantly in for the equaliser and what should have been his hat-trick.
Just after the hour, Oriol Romeu rose superbly to head against the post with De Gea beaten. And as the clock ticked away it looked like, if anyone, the Saints would grab the winner.
But then Zlatan was there in the right place at the right time, to head home unmarked with four minutes on the clock. It’s all about finishing and that’s exactly why Manchester United brought the great man to England.
