T20 1: India vs Bangladesh: No Hasan means Trouble for The Tigers

T20 1: India vs Bangladesh

It’s going to be hot and sunny (around 30C) for T20 1: India vs Bangladesh at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Dehli on Sunday, great for the passionate Indian cricket fans; but the tourists already have a major problem to overcome.

The pre-match T20 1: India vs Bangladesh news is dominated by a tale of two captains, the hosts are giving Virat Kohli a well earned rest, but Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan is taking an involuntary sabbatical having been found guilty of corruption.

This is a huge blow for his team as the banned skipper is the top rated all-rounder in the ICC T20 rankings.

With India ranked fifth in the world and Bangladesh ninth this looks like a series the hosts can dominate, and Hasan’s absence will make it all the more difficult for the tourists. The Men in Blue will have a relatively young side, but they come into the series with some useful momentum, having hammered South Africa in a recent Test series.

This is a chance to replicate their superiority in the Test arena and ODI competition in the shortest form of the game.

Talking Points

Hasan banned for at least a year

Bangladesh have received the worst possible news in the run up to this tour with the confirmation that their best player and captain, Shakib Al Hasan has been banned for two years, for ‘failing to report corrupt approaches’. The approaches came back in 2018, during a Tri-Series involving Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe and also during the 2018 IPL.

One year of the 32 year-old’s ban is suspended, and he will be available to return to action on 29th October 2020.

Shakib is some player, representing his country on 338 occasions, and he was the third highest run scorer in the 2019 ODI World Cup, hitting two centuries, one against ultimate champions England at Cardiff. His vast experience would have been crucial to Bangladesh in the Indian conditions.

Vice captain Mahmudullah will step up for this series, while Mominul Haque is taking over as Test captain. The 33 year old Mahmudullah is the natural choice for this tour; the off-spinner and middle order batsman currently sits fourth in the ICC list of top all-rounders in the world, and he will rely on the experience of wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahhim and batsman Tamil Iqbal to help him plug the huge gap left by Hasan.

King Kohli takes a rest

There is no such drama in the Indian camp, merely a holiday for the excellent Virat Kohli. But his temporary replacement is more than capable of filling his boots. Stand in skipper Rohit Sharma is an imposing figure, recently smashing a record number of sixes for a Test batsman as he hit two centuries in the opening Test against South Africa, and he has become only the third Indian player, after Kohli and Gautam Gambhir, to reach the top ten in the ICC Rankings across all three formats of the game.

The Men in Blue completely dominated their series against South Africa so much so that the Proteas captain Faf du Plessis said his side had been left with mental scars which will be tough to overcome, not least by Sharma’s brutal hitting.

And he has a decent captaincy record, having won IPL trophies as a skipper; and he has all the experience required to lead this India team.

This is a key series for two of his players. Wicket keeper Rishabh Pant wants to impress in the run up to the 2020 T20 World Cup, and the returning right arm leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal will be in the spotlight as one of the spinners who should prosper in these hot and dry conditions.

History

India have won eight to Bangladesh’s none in the T20 head to heads and I can’t see much of a case for the tourists breaking their duck over the next couple of weeks, though they will take some confidence having dominated the recent Tri-Series with Afghanistan, topping the table with three wins.

Only rain on the day of the final meant they had to share the trophy with Afghanistan. I suspect they’ll need some freak weather to save them in Dehli.

Betting Tip

??
India vs Bangladesh India Asian Handicap 0.00 @ 1.15
November 3, 21:30 (GMT+8)

The T20 1: India vs Bangladesh 2019 betting odds here at SBOBET make the hosts strong favourites at odds of 1.15 to win, with the tourists out at 6.50.

Even without Kohli the home side has far more balance and quality in depth, and in Sharma they have a superb leader. Bangladesh arrive in some disarray and they will need to play out of their skins to have any hope of pulling off a serious surprise.
